Week 9 – Homework Business Intelligence

Discussion Question 1:

How does prescriptive analytics relate to descriptive and predictive analytics?

Discussion Question 2:

Explain the differences between static and dynamic models. How can one evolve into the other?

Discussion Question 3:

What is the difference between an optimistic approach and a pessimistic approach to decision making under assumed uncertainty?

Discussion Question 4:

Explain why solving problems under uncertainty sometimes involves assuming that the problem is to be solved under conditions of risk.

Exercise 4:

Descriptive analysis is the first stage of data processing that builds a summary of historical data to generate essential information and probably get the data ready for further inspection. Predictive analytics is a type of improved analytics that employs both new and historical data to predict future events, trends, and behavior. On the other hand, prescriptive analysis is a field of business analytics (BA) that mainly involves determining the best course of action for a given scenario ( Frazzetto et al., 2019 ). Prescriptive analysis is related to both predictive and descriptive analytics. Since descriptive analysis intends to offer insight into what has happened and predictive assists model and forecast what might occur, prescriptive intends to find the best solution among varying choices, given the known parameters.

A static model explains the relationship between parts of a system at a point in a given time, whereas a dynamic model explains the relationship that exists between parts of a system within a given period, whereby its state at one instant affects its state at the next. Static models are always at equilibrium in a steady state while dynamic models keep changing with time. For a static model to evolve into a dynamic model, it is crucial to add their relationships between time for the static model in a certain period relies on the system variables values in a particular time instead of being independent, which might maximize the complexity of the model and make it stronger.
