APPENDIX 1:

Summative Discussion: Construction of Data Flow Diagrams (DFD)

Using the information given below in the case study for Hatfield Digital Equipment Rental Services (HDERS), draw a context diagram and a Level 1 data flow diagram of the company’s digital equipment rental processing system. The Level 1 data flow diagram should functionally decompose the context diagram of the HDERS system. State your assumptions and critically discuss the results.

CASE STUDY: Hatfield Digital Equipment Rental Services (HDERS)

Hatfield Digital Equipment Rental Services based in Hatfield UK rent out digital equipment in Hertfordshire. The company is developing a digital equipment rental processing system for managing rentals to pre-registered customers. A customer file in the digital equipment rental processing system stores details of registered customers. When customer makes a digital equipment rental request, the request is processed by a rent digital equipment (RENTDE) process.

Using the digital equipment rental request supplied by the customer, the RENTDE process obtains customer registration details from the customer file and pricing details from a digital equipment file to produce a bill to the customer. The RENTDE process also produces digital equipment rental information to the customer and sends the information to a rental information file. When customers return rented digital equipment, they provide digital equipment rental information and the return is processed by return digital equipment (RTNDE) process. The RTNDE process sends the digital equipment rental information to the rental information file and delivers a return receipt to the customer. Due to COVID-19 considerations, all returned rented digital equipment are sanitized and the associated sanitisation information is stored in an equipment sanitisation file. The sanitisation activities are handled by a rental digital equipment sanitisation process (RDESP).

Finally, a manager can request rental report from generate digital equipment rental report (GDERR) process. Data in the rental information file and the equipment sanitisation file are used by the GDERR process to produce the rental report to the manager.
