Principles of Pharmacology and Drug Discovery

Assignment Task

You will provide a series of three fully referenced blogs on a topic related to research ethics and translational medicine, presented and created in WordPress. Below summarises what each blog should cover and to what type of audience:

Blog 1) Must review a journal article of your choice detailing a recent advancement in drug discovery. This blog should be written for the scientific community.

Blog 2) Will aim to inform the general public of the 3R’s and how they are integrated into drug development.

Blog 3) Will explain the alternatives available to replace animals in drug research aimed at an audience of undergraduate bioscience students.

Each blog must summarise the area in 333 words. The total word count for all 3 blogs is 1000 words +10%, meaning you can submit a maximum of 1100 words. If you exceed this limit you mark will be reduced by 10%.You are required to research your topic in depth using current literature to support the selected area.

You are required to complete your blog using WordPress which will be available via the student portal (guidance on it’s use will be provided on Aula) and submit a PDF version of the text content to Turnitin using the link provided on the 7008BMS Aula space (under the assessment tab). The PDF submission must contain a WordPress link for each blog.

A DRAFT link is provided for you on your Community Aula page in order to check your similarity score prior to making your final submission. You may submit multiple times to this link, but do remember that obtaining a similarity report may take up to 24 hours.

The FINAL link is for submission of your work for assessment which can be found on the 7008BMS Aula space. You may submit only ONCE to this link.

·        Please convert your final submission to a PDF format as these suffer less from formatting changes.

·        Please remember that submission can take time to complete, and therefore ensure you do this early. The TurnitinUK system will record the date and time of your submission and cannot be over-written.

If you experience any technical problems when trying to submit your work, please consult IT support. If these problems are experienced at the time of the submission deadline, please capture screenshots as evidence and email these and your completed assessment to the module leader.

The ability to communicate science to a variety of audiences is a vital skill in many different areas of work and future careers. Furthermore, researching topics related to ethics and new developments in pharmacology and drug discovery will enhance critical discussion within a blog. Using WordPress to create blogs provides an effective platform to create visually interesting content that are adapted to different audiences.

Novel drug discoveries are at the forefront of medical progress and offer hope to countless numbers of people suffering from illnesses. Recent research reveals that cancer is the major cause of death worldwide. As a result, various cytotoxic immunotherapies and widely utilized conventional treatments have been designed and released to the market.

Mohanty et al. (2019) assert that the development of a successful immunotherapy that selectively targets cancers at the genetic and cellular levels is important, whilst stressing the complex functionality of tumors and the engagement of multiple genetic and cellular factors that contribute to tumorigenesis and metastasis. As shown in Figure 1, Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapy is a therapeutic T cell engineering technology that has arisen in recent years as a relatively fresh development, in which T cells obtained from patient blood are engineered in vitro to express artificial receptors targeted to a specific tumor antigen. These allow the tumor antigen to be detected in a straightforward manner, eliminating the necessity for the major histocompatibility complex.
