Your assessment brief:

A: Essay

Each student is required to write a final essay that demonstrates their ability to synthesise the concepts and theories explored in the course.

Length: 3,000 words (worth 50% of the overall mark)

Choose one of the following 3 general umbrella topics from below. After choosing one of the options below, students will develop a more specific essay with an argument from the research in journal articles within the general umbrella topic.

Topic a: Critically analyse the strategies of two large multinational companies from two different sectors to show to what extent they are addressing the climate/environmental emergency.

Topic b: Provide a critical essay on the credibility and accuracy of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) reports. Use 2+ companies and their CSR reports as examples to strengthen your arguments within.

Topic c: Examine the implications of the concentration of international economic power in the hands of MNEs. Do these enterprises move the world towards trade patterns that favour one's comparative advantage? If 'Yes' then why? If 'not' then what would you suggest as an alternative? Use ONE company as a case study to support your interpretation.

Please note that the above is a mandatory requirement, and should you miss the session/submission or there may be a penalty of 7% of your final grade.

Web-based international management Simulation Game and Report: PhoneVentures

Part A. of the assessment is an innovative form of assessment. The online management simulation

PhoneVentures was developed by the digital publisher Edumundo.co.uk.

In this simulation, each group of students (consisting of approx. 5 students per team- Maximum 5) manage their own globally operating Smart Phone company. In a highly competitive setting, actually playing against the other student teams within this module, the companies have to determine their international strategic business plan and conducting internal and external analysis (such as the overseas markets, trends, news items, Hofstede’s culture differences, financials, stock & demand, HRM performances, etc.). Based on this strategic plan and analysis each team has to take operational decisions on country and global level such as: (online) global marketing, local country marketing, HRM investments and projects, R&D investments, warehouse contracts, loans, logistic service provider analysis, etc. etc.

The simulation lasts for 6 weeks and runs over Reading week. Students are to ensure they meet, discuss weekly entries, and enter the weekly decisions on time each week according to the schedule. Each week, one round is being played, which indicates one year of operations within the management simulation and submit at 1700 every Monday.

Following presentation submission, groups will complete a Q&A session by asking questions of the submitted presentations. Student groups who do not ask questions and engage with the activity will risk losing 10% of their own presentation grade.

Students will complete a peer observation/assessment for the group members which will individualise the grades of the group members.

Due to Covid and government restrictions, if presentations are allowed, they may be performed face-to-face, if unable to present face-to-face, presentations will be provided in

video format online. Details will be confirmed in accordance with the university’s COVID policies closer to the period.

Use of Adobe Rush is recommended to join together individual videos into one presentation; however, any software may be used as long as the video is accessible. Our expectations of the contents of each presentation are detailed below.

For students arriving late or failing to join a group and unable to take part in the simulation game, there are alternative assessments for B1 & B2. These are noted separately in Moodle. Discuss with your tutor. The deadlines of presentation and Final Reflective Report remain the same with adjustments on focus for each.

An urgent and pressing need to address the growing negative effects of human activity on the Earth's natural systems, including the atmosphere, oceans, land, and biodiversity, is known as a climatic or environmental emergency. Lister (2018) highlights that human actions, including burning fossil fuels, deforestation, industrial operations, and agriculture, are to blame for the emergency's excessive greenhouse gas emissions, which cause the globe to warm up and modify its weather patterns. These problems sig nificantly affect people's health, economic development, and social stability. Patagonia and Unilever are the two international corporations examined in this study. In 1973, the American outdoor clothing manufacturer Patagonia was established. The business is renowned for its dedication to social responsibility and environmental sustainability. It has put into practice a number of steps to lessen its carbon footprint, including buying all of its cotton from organic farmers, using recycled materials in its g oods, and investing in renewable energy.

In 1929, the British-Dutch consumer products corporation Unilever was established. With a portfolio of well-known brands like Dove, Lipton, and Ben & Jerry's, the company offers various goods in the food, personal care, and cleaning sectors. Unilever has established challenging environmental objectives, such as obtaining 100% of its agricultural raw materials from sustainable sources, turning its carbon footprint carbon positive by 2030, and doing away with plastic packaging waste by 2025. (Su, Wang and Zhao, 2022). This analysis aims to clarify the role that multinational corporations can play in addressing the climate emergency and emphasize the value of sustainability and CSR in business practices. The investigati on will evaluate how well the businesses are responding to the environmental emergency, their sustainability measures, effects on the environment, and social repercussions.
